“I had a moment of enlightenment that inspired me and put me on a path of purpose.”

In 2012, I suffered burnout for the first time in my career. When it hit me, it hit me hard.

If I could pinpoint a time when it all started, it would be impossible, but I believe things began to take a toll when I was impacted by an onslaught of gun violence, in the community I once lived in and continue to work in. These events coupled with the typical stress of the work that those of us who work in the social services can oftentimes experience, over a period of years serving their communities, made things difficult.  Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do and believe my calling is to use my skills and my experiences to help individuals and families but I had been working so hard for so many years, working, raising my family and pursuing a degree without taking much of a break. Something had to give.

During this time it was hard to focus and the personal and professional lines were blurred. I was going through a wave of emotions, mostly riding the lows. At times I felt as if I was drowning, while at other times, I felt like I was blowing in the wind.  My personal relationships were also impacted. I felt isolated and wanted to be alone.

I eventually sought professional help from a Psychologist. That was when I had a name for what I was going through, I was suffering from burn out. Funny, how we often do not see the things that affect us, even when we are trained to see it in others.

It was during this time that I read two books that would change my life and my approach to serving my clients.

Bonnie Ware’s message of hope, motivation and inspiration helped me realize even more that I wanted to be a better me.

The first book was, “Who Cares for Us: Opening Paths into a Critical, Collective Notion of Self-care” by Norma Jean Profitt and the second was Bonnie Ware’s “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A life Transformed by the Dearly Departed”.

I embraced Profitt’s message that self-care enhances the process of healing and regeneration which helps you limit the stresses and strains by encouraging you to engage in enjoyable activities and hobbies.

Bonnie Ware’s message of hope, motivation and inspiration helped me realize even more that I wanted to be a better me.

In most professions, we are encouraged to separate the personal from the professional. However, as a social worker, social injustices have been a part of my life and experiences and I have trouble separating work from my personal life.

As a result, I’ve questioned myself, “If I can never take my professional hat off, then how can I practice the essentials of self-care?”

“Choosing happiness and peace while living your purpose. This became my livement”

I had a moment of enlightenment that inspired me and put me on a PATH OF PURPOSE. I wanted to use my new found knowledge to help people learn the importance of taking care of themselves.

Practicing self-care to me is embedded in the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. The process of self-care involves working hard to pursue your dreams and aspirations, making time for family, friends, hobbies and personal health while learning to resolve conflict and letting go of resentments in your life.

CHOOSING HAPPINESS AND PEACE while living your purpose; this became my “LIVEMENT”.

LIVEMENT MEANS TAKING ACTION OF YOUR LIFE WHILE YOU ARE LIVING AND NEVER RETIRING BECAUSE YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU LOVE.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and I hope you find some inspiration to go out and make your own livement moment in your lifetime!
